How to build an evening wind-down that works
A consistent wind-down is the strongest single habit for falling asleep faster. Here is how to build one that you will actually keep.
The strongest predictor of falling asleep easily is consistency — a body that has learned, night after night, that a certain point in the evening means sleep. A wind-down is how you teach it.
Fix the start time
Choose a wind-down start time and keep it. The routine only works if it happens at roughly the same time, because the cue is the combination of time and habit.
Dim the lights
Lower lights and screens as you wind down. Bright light, and especially blue screen light, tells the brain it is daytime. Dim the room and put the phone down.
One calm activity
Pick one calm thing — reading, gentle stretching, a warm shower, or writing down tomorrow's worries. Keep it short and repeatable, and end it in bed.
Print the evening wind-down checklist and keep it where you'll see it.
